Betty and Barney Hill: The Zeta Riticuli Incident
Betty and Barney Hill were an American Couple living in the U.S State of New Hampshire during the 1960's. They are also the first documentated Alien abductees, in the world.
At around quarter past 10 on the night of September 19th1961, Betty and Barney Hill claimed to have been followed by a ufo, while driving to their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after a recent trip to the Niagra Falls. Driving down a long dirt road in rural New Hampshire, the Hills claimed that they witnessed a disk-shaped object floating in the sky above their car. At first, it is said that Barney and Betty believed that the object was infact a malfunctioning plane. So, fearing that something was wrong, Barney pulled over in an attempt to take a closer look at the object using a pair of binoculars that he kept in the back seat. It was only when he and his wife did this, that they noticed 'figures' moving around inside of the ufo. Betty and Barney became frightened and thought in was in their best interest to drive away from the object, so, they did just that. Soon, two hours of the Hill's life would simply vanish as if they never happened.
After resuming their journey home, it appeared to them that they were no longer being followed by the strange craft, but heard only one odd beeping noise. Moments later, they heard the beeping sound again but were suddenly thirty five miles farther down the road than a moment ago...
The mood was quiet and calm as they proceeded home and went to bed. They both slept the night through as if nothing had happened and woke up the following afternoon. When Betty awake she decided to call her sister Janet and tell her of the previous nights events. Janet thought that it would be beneficial to Betty's mind to call the nearby Pease Air Force Base and report what they had seen.
Betty reported the incident, speaking to Major Paul W. Henderson, who told Betty; "The UFO was also confirmed by our radar." It is important to note at this point that Barney was against calling the sighting in to the base, hoping to keep it quiet.
At this time, neither Betty nor Barney recalled any form of abduction. However that didn't last for long. Soon, Betty began having reaccuring nightmares of her and her husband being taken aboard a craft like object, against their will. In a matter of just weeks, a couple of local writers heard of the story and started interviewing the Hill's on the events of that night onwards, recording all events in a log. Through doing this, they discovered that there were more than two hours unaccounted for in the Hills story.
Shortly after, Betty wrote a letter to a man named Major Donald Kehoe, who passed her information on to one Walter Webb, who was on the staff of the Hayden Planetarium. Webb, at the time, was a scientific advisor for the National Investigations Committee on Arial Phenomena (commonly referred to as NICAP). What he did with the report is unknown.
It was Major MacDonald who made the suggestion to the Hills that regressive hypnosis might account for the two hours of missing time. In the spring of 1962, the Hills contacted a psychiatrist about the hypnosis sessions, but decided to put it off for a time. All the while, Betty continued to have ongoing nightmares.
Dr Simon used a treatment known as progressive hypnosis to identify the events of that night. He began the sessions on Barney and then Betty second. The process was extremely slow as it was a very complex issue, but after 6 months, it was Dr. Simon's expert opinion that the Hills had been abducted, and taken aboard an unknown flying craft on the night in question.
Under hypnosis they stated that they had been taken separately aboard the craft, treated well by the occupants - rather as humans might treat experimental animals - and then released after having been given the hypnotic suggestion that they would remember nothing of that particular experience. The method of their release supposedly accounted for the amnesia, which was apparently broken only by counterhypnosis.
Dr. Stanton Friedman spent many long hours with the Hills, discussing the case, and being a nut and bolts man, issued this statement; "By no stretch of the imagination could anyone who knows them conclude that they were nuts," he emphasizes. The Hills had been interviewed and questioned by others scientists and investigators; some under hypnosis, and all are in agreement on one important fact.
The Hills did NOT make their story up, and the events put forward are based upon some REAL event. Although Barney and Betty were in an interracial marriage, which unfortunately cast an unfavorable shadow on them, we must remember that Betty had a Master's Degree in social work, and Barney served on the governor of New Hampshire's Civil Rights Commission.
When Betty Hill was aboard the craft, she stated that she was shown a 'star map' and was asked by the beings to point on the map where they were, she did not know. At this time, astronomy was not fully known and the map would have to be studied for a lengthy amount of time to be identified.
The map that Betty was shown was a three-dimesional view with different size dots and lines on it, like a plotting system. The strange thing is, 8 years later, when more powerful telescopes were invented, several scientists and astronomers found the star map that Betty claims to have been shown, in the Universe. As Betty was under hypnosis at the time of drawing the map, this had to be on recollection on memory. It would have been impossible for her to know of that specific part of the universe, as it had not yet been discovered. The location is believed to have been 220 trillion miles - 37 light years from Earth, looking towards our Sun.
The Betty and Barney Hill case is interesting in the least. And possibly one of the most believable Alien abductions to date.
